Canon EOS R5 – 8K RAW

So Canon’s foray into the mirrorless market has had a couple of false starts, namely the EOS R and the EOS RP. Condolences to anyone that purchased either of these units – expect a flood of these units to appear on eBay and secondhand sales sites towards the end of this year.

At the time of writing this, Canon hasn’t actually announced key R5 info such as Release date, Pricing, video and Recording time. The only official nod is towards a late 2020 release inline with possible COVID-19 isolation easing.

What we do know are some core tech specs that put the EOS R5 into the ‘game changer’ category, check these out:

KEY SPECIFICATIONS

  • 45MP Full-Frame CMOS Sensor with DIGIC 8 Image processor
  • In-Built Image Stabilisation (compliant with any IS lenses)
  • 8K Video up to 30p (29.97) in Canon RAW
  • 8K Video up to 30p in 4:2:2 10 bit Canon Log H.265
  • 8K Video 4:2:2 10 bit HDR PQ H.265
  • 4K 120fps 4:2:2 10 bit Canon Log
  • No sensor crop when shooting 8K video
  • All recording modes and frame rates can be recorded internally
  • Dual Pixel Auto Focus (so it tracks moving subjects)
  • Dual memory card slots – CFexpress and UHS-II SD
  • Animal, Eye and Face detection

Apparently a lot of the AF technology from the EOS-1D X Mark III is being rolled into the R5.

8K video in H265 is going to give most 2015 or earlier desktop editing machines a mild lobotomy (don’t talk about multicam workflows), but the enhancements in the R5 are applicable at all frame sizes.

If you have a tonne of EF lenses (like me) you’ll still be able to buy an adaptor to get them working on the R5’s mirrorless setup but it might be time to consider selling your internal organs or turning tricks on the block to save for one or two of those tasty looking RF lenses.
